A teenager walking around one of the city’s designated priority neighbourhoods in broad daylight with a loaded gun was apprehended by police.
At around 3.45 p.m. on June 20, police received a 9-1-1 emergency call stating that there was a person armed with a firearm near Finch Ave. E and Victoria Park Ave.
“Somebody from the community called the police and when the officers arrived in the area, they found a man matching the description provided by the caller,” said42 Division Detective Sergeant Paul Macintyre. “When the officers approached him, he started to hold the front of his pants where they found a fully loaded weapon ready to fire.”
Police recovered a Ruger P90 .45 calibre handgun.
The youth is facing several charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition.
Officers from 42 Division’s Primary Response and Major Crime units along with 33 Division members attended the scene.
Macintyre praised the community for stepping forward.
“They gave us information and we were able to respond,” he said. “We want the community to know we take their calls seriously and we will promptly come out and make arrests.”
