Police have released security camera video of two male suspects walking towards the shooting scene, then running away, moments later, after 61-year-old Peggy Ann Smith was fatally shot in the Dundas St. and Don Valley Parkway Area on August 27.
She, along with her daughter and granddaughter, was outside the rear of their address which backs onto the Don Mount Circle laneway when two male suspects approached and started shooting.
Smith was struck by gunfire while she and her family members attempted to run to safety.
Following the shooting, the two suspects ran back north up the laneway and were later seen at Dundas and Hamilton Sts.
One suspect is described as in his 20s with brown complexion, average build and about 5’6”. He had what was described as a full beard and was wearing dark pants, a grey hoodie with the hood up and a black baseball cap.
The other suspect is described as a black, of Somali descent, in his late teens to early 20s, with a skinny build and about 5’11”. He was also wearing dark pants and a grey hoodie with the hood up. His hoodie may have had a dark band running horizontally across the bottom of the hoodie.
At a press conference on August 30, Detective David Dickinson said he believed the shooting was targeted.
“I do not believe Peggy or her present family at the time were the intended targets,” he pointed out.
The Homicide officer said there were several young men outside in the laneway near where Smith was shot.
“I have spoken to a few of these men,” he said. “However, there are a few who have yet to come forward. I need these men to contact me. It’s my belief that this group of men were the ones targeted.”
