Police is seeking the public’s help in tracking down the killer of a Greater Toronto Area resident.
At around 11.30 p.m. on August 14, officers responded to gunshot sounds in the area of Martingrove Rd. and John Garland Rd. They found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased has been identified as 33-year-old Andre Phoenix.
At a news conference at 23 Division on August 16, Homicide Detective Jeffery Tavares said Phoenix was walking in a plaza at 1701 Martingrove Rd. towards a storefront when a four-door, light-coloured vehicle was observed approaching the plaza’s parking lot.
“I believe that the deceased was made aware of this vehicle and created distance between the witness and the vehicle that was approaching him,” he alleged. “At this time, the vehicle stopped short of the deceased, an interaction occurred between the deceased and the occupants of the vehicle and gunfire came from within the vehicle, striking the deceased.”
Tavares said the vehicle sped off towards John Garland Blvd. in a westbound direction.
He also pointed out that the deceased was visiting a friend in the area.
“Although he doesn’t live in the neighbourhood, he has ties to it,” he added.
