Police have released security camera video and images of a vehicle and suspect wanted in connection with a fatal shooting on Sunday, July 8.
At around 3:20 a.m., the TPS Communications Centre received several 9-1-1 calls regarding a shooting in the area of 415 Driftwood Ave. The shooting occurred close to a pedestrian bridge that crosses over Driftwood Ave.
Officers from 31 Division and emergency paramedics located a young man with obvious signs of trauma. Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful and he succumbed to his injuries. He was identified as 25-year-old Karim Hirani of Toronto.
A post-mortem examination on July 9 revealed he died of a gunshot wound to the head.
At a news conference at police headquarters on July 11, Detective Sergeant Mike Carbone said Hirani was in the company of two men.
“It appears that the three men purchased some alcohol and commenced drinking in a courtyard very near the pedestrian bridge,” he said. “During this time, an unknown male parks his vehicle in the eastern parking lot of the building. The unknown male exits the vehicle and walks towards where the deceased and his friends were standing. This unknown male then walks directly towards the deceased and shoots him.”
After the shooting, the unknown man runs back to his vehicle and drives away.
Carbone said the motive for the shooting is still unknown and police are appealing for witnesses.
The suspect was driving a dark Nissan Maxima with Ontario licence plate CCES 572.
“We are currently following up with the identified vehicle,” said Carbone. “With the available information, we have learned that the vehicle is registered to a numbered company. We have come to understand that the vehicles registered to this numbered company are being rented. However, this would not be considered a traditional rental company. We are currently reaching out to the owners.”
Anyone with information on the male or the vehicle is asked to contact Homicide at 416-808-7400, or give a tip to Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at 222tips.com, text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).
